Accessibility of Your Event Website – Guidelines and Requirements
Starting June 28, 2025, the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) and the accompanying BFSG Regulation (BFSGV) will come into effect. These laws define binding accessibility requirements for digital products and services — including websites. For public sector institutions, the Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities Act (BGG) also applies.
Please check whether and to what extent these legal requirements apply to your organization and your event website.
To support you in creating an accessible event website, we have already ensured that the framework and core user interface elements of the site are accessible.
Since you are responsible for creating and managing the content of your event website, the accessibility of that content is your responsibility.
Design Guidelines for Accessible Content
Please follow these best practices when designing your event website:
Images and Media
Add alternative text (alt text) for every image.
Avoid presenting essential information solely through images or PDFs – always provide a text alternative.
If your event includes video content, provide captions and, where possible, an audio description.
Structure and Headings
Include at least one main heading (H1) as the title of your page (Editor button 'Headings').
Use structured subheadings (H2, H3, etc.) to organize content logically – this improves readability and accessibility for screen reader users.
Maintain a clear and consistent content hierarchy throughout your page.
Typography and Readability
Ensure sufficient color contrast between text and background (e.g., test using the WCAG contrast checker).
Use legible font sizes (at least 16 px) and adequate line spacing and paragraph breaks.
Avoid overly decorative fonts or excessive formatting (e.g., blinking text or too many colors).
Clarity and Comprehension
Write in clear, concise, and plain language – avoid jargon or unnecessarily complex sentences.
Break up long sections with paragraphs, bullet points, and subheadings.
Ensure the navigation is intuitive and accessible for all users.
